WHAT IS THE WEEKEND FOR WOMEN CONFERENCE?

The Weekend for Women Conference is a unique weekend conference focused on women with diabetes-- and their unique challenges and issues.  Weekend for Women Conference participants attend educational sessions on gender-specific issues related to diabetes treatment and care (such as body image, depression, pregnancy/menopause), speak one-on-one with other women living successfully with diabetes, receive unbiased information on the emergence of new equipment and medications, and learn new tactics for improving their physical and mental health.

In 2012, DiabetesSisters (www.diabetessisters.org) will be hosting the 3rd Annual Weekend for Women Conference in Raleigh, NC on May 18-May 20, 2012.  DiabetesSisters is a 501c3 national nonprofit oragnization whose mission is to improve the health and quality of life of women with and at risk of diabetes; and to advocate on their behalf.  The 2012 Conference will take place at Marriott City Center in downtwn Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Keynote Speaker/DiabetesSisters Inspiration Award Winner in 2012 will be Natalie Strand, winner of The Amazing Race in 2010!  She was part of the first female team to win and she the first person with diabetes to win the competition!

WHAT IS THE PARTNER'S PERSPECTIVE PROGRAM?

The Partner's Perspective Program is a one-of-a-kind program for the partner's, spouses, and significant others of the women who attend the Weekend for Women Conference in Raleigh, NC.  While the women attend informative, fun sessions about living with diabetes and connect with other women who "get them", their partners can spend time with others who understand the challenges and benefits of living with a woman with diabetes and learn more about how to best support, cope with, and manage this lifestyle.  Activities include (but are not limited to) general group discussions, Q & A sessions with leading experts, social activities, and fitness/awareness activities (i.e.orange:will Awareness Walk).

Don't worry-- it is all planned by spouses and partners themselves, so it appeals to this unique group.  The Program is led by Chris Barnes, husband of Brandy Barnes, the Founder/CEO of DiabetesSisters.  Alex Munoz, husband of Sysy Morales, the creator of The Girl's Guide to Diabetes, and David Edelman, Founder of Diabetes Daily and husband of Elizabeth Edelman are also assisting in the planning of this event.  If you would like to find out more information about this event, please email Chris at chrisbarnes@diabetessisters.org.  The registration fee for this event is $25 per person.  Updates on event programming will be posted as they become available.

WHAT IS THE ORANGE:WILL DIABETES AWARENESS WALK presented by DiabetesSisters and Novo Nordisk?

WALK UPDATE: You can avoid the check-in lines on Sunday by picking up your Walk packet, Paula Deen recipe cards, and t-shirt on Friday, May 18 from 4-6pm at Omega Sports- North Hills in Raleigh, NC.

Orange:will is a national campaign started by DiabetesSisters in 2010 to raise the public's awareness about the unique challenges faced by women with diabetes and to establish orange as the official color of women's diabetes.

On Sunday, May 20, 2012, The 2012 orange:will Diabetes Awareness Walk presented by DiabetesSisters and Novo Nordisk will take place at 8am in downtown Raleigh in coordination with National Women’s Health Awareness Month (May). The Walk not only raises awareness about the unique issues faced by women with diabetes and the “willpower” required to manage them, but it also raises funds for more programming and research to support women with diabetes. Walk Registration is FREE and open to the entire community.

Once you register for the Walk, you can use our online fundraising tools to create your Personal Web Page, email your friends, family and co-workers, accept online donations and raise more money to support women with diabetes.  EVERYONE who registers for the Walk online will receive never before released Diabetic-Friendly Paula Deen Recipe Cards.  Every registrant who raises at least $40 will receive a souvenir Walk t-shirt.

It's more fun to show our orange:will POWER Together! Gather your friends, family, and co-workers and form a Walk team! It's a great way to do something together and share in a fun and health community experience!  Teams come in all sizes-- two or more people make a team!  Corporations, friends & family, clubs, organizations, and school groups build teams to walk for those who have been touched by diabetes.

When you walk, you declare your support of women with diabetes worldwide. Walking is one of the easiest, most relaxing forms of exercise for many people, but especially for those living with diabetes.  Walking helps control blood glucose levels in people with diabetes and improves overall quality of life.  It is also an activity that can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in people at risk.

If you are unable to join us in Raleigh, NC for the Walk...you can show your support and garner the support of friends, family, and co-workers by registering as a Virtual Walker. If you would like to raise funds offline, please download a copy of the Walker Donation Form here.

Media coverage will be provided by ABC 11 (Official Media Sponsor of the Conference and the Walk) and beverages will be provided by Zevia (Official Beverage Sponsor of the Walk).  Other Walk sponsors include: Johnson Controls.
