Mary Tyler Moore on GMA this morning

Did anyone see the segment on Mary Tyler Moore on Good Morning America this morning? She has a new book out called "Growing Up Again" where she opens up a lot about her life experiences with diabetes. After watching it, I immediately thought, "There should be MORE women with diabetes being highlighted in the media for their accomplishments as 'every day women' with diabetes!" Young girls with diabetes need good role models and heck, we ALL need to see that there is more than ONE WOMAN with diabetes who has lived a long, happy, successful life!

What are your thoughts? on the book? on Mary Tyler Moore? on female role models with diabetes?

I'm glad that you saw that! My mother told me to watch GMA...but you know me and watching TV :) My internet was funky last night - but I wanted to send you an email to make sure you saw that! Definitely going to buy her book. Glad that Mary Tyler Moore is opening up on national television about women and diabetes!

I didn't see it, but I will definately look for the book next time I'm out.
I remember a lady coming up to me to tell me that she had a diabetic daughter who was young. She was so excited and told her daughter about me, a young, thin diabetic. I think it made her feel like her daughter still had a "chance".
Recently, there was a girl in my school (I'm a teacher) diagnosed with type 1. This is the first time in 8 years that I have been in a building with a diabetic. I was almost excited to have the opportunity to help this girl. However, I'm not sure that she feels like she needs someone right now.
I am just happy whenever I see another woman with diabetes who I can open up with. It took me over 11 years to even speak to another women with the same type as me. I felt so good to know that I'm not out there all alone.
I hope that more people continue to make their marks on type 1 so that others can see how "normal" we are, we can eat food and yes, even sugar.
I've always dreamed of an Oprah episode on women with Type 1. Diabetes Sisters seems like an organization that could make their way onto her show. :)

I agree!!! I get so excited to meet and talk with another woman with diabetes. It is always inspiring in some way to learn about the woman and what she has done in her life.

It is also so good to have a woman like Mary Tyler Moore out there talking about it and opening the public's eyes to what a woman with diabetes is! (There are so many misconceptions out there!) I missed her on Good Morning America, but hope to see it online.

And an Oprah episode about women living with diabetes... such a great idea!!!
