SISTER SPOTLIGHT:
Cele Flanary
As a woman with Type I diabetes for over 28 years, I have to admit that it has been a lonely journey...that is, until I discovered DiabetesSisters. Diagnosed at age 32 with gestational diabetes during my third pregnancy, I was thankful to have a healthy baby-- even though he weighed over 11 pounds and the birth was traumatic for both of us. Life returned to normal, or so I thought. Within six months, I was diagnosed with Type I and found myself with three young children and this new diagnosis.
I was totally overwhelmed; there was too much to absorb: diabetes education about care and daily management, insulin, shots, finger sticks, blood sugar swings, food exchanges, highs, and lows. How could I do all this and take care of my other responsibilities? I went through all the classic reactions - shock, denial, more shock and feeling my life was over. The worst of it was there was no one who truly understood what I was going through and wanted to listen. It took me a while to learn what I needed to manage my diabetes and I'm still learning. But over the years, this is what worked for me:
- Finding a great endocrinologist and medical team is very important. Keep searching for the right team that is compatible with you and your needs.
- Educate yourself about diabetes. Expect to have rough days which will teach you a lot about yourself and your diabetes care. This is a lifelong journey and constant learning experience.
- Stay positive. Seek out positive support people in your life.
- Exercise does help - it doesn't have to be an extreme workout, even a walk keeps you moving and out of the kitchen.
- Don't expect perfection! Your best is good enough. Each day your personal best will be different.
- Be as good to yourself as you are to others. Be open about your diabetes and your treatment.
- Diabetes has made me a lot stronger than I ever imagined I could be.
DiabetesSisters has been a blessing for me. I saw the link for their website in Diabetes Forecast magazine earlier this year. From my first contact, I've experienced kind, supportive women who are working hard to provide a network for all women with diabetes. I was fortunate to attend DiabetesSisters Weekend for Women Conference held in Raleigh this past May. What I found there were experts who discussed important issues for diabetic women, but more importantly, the networking and sharing with other women with diabetes was invaluable. This networking inspired me to begin a PODS Meetup in my local community to continue learning from other women. So, my journey continues... but thankfully, I am no longer on my own!

Due to technical challenges beyond the control of DiabetesSisters, the new, improved website was not complete in time to launch on its originally scheduled launch date of November 14th. Rest assured that DiabetesSisters staff is working hard behind the scenes with the web development company to get the new site up and running as soon as possible. We are currently scheduled to launch the new site in mid-December. Until then, we encourage to continue to visit us, post in the Women's Forum and read sisterTALK blogs. All registered members will receive an e-blast on the day the new website launches.
DIABETESSISTERS AND #GIVINGTUESDAY PARTNER TO RAISE AWARENESS OF DIABETESSISTERS' VALUABLE WORK
#GivingTuesday is a movement that encourages more people to think about meaningful ways to give back. DiabetesSisters participated in this first-of-its-kind effort on November 27th by asking people to support the organization through theThis Week I Will campaign. DiabeteSisters' Facebook and Twitter feeds were abuzz on November 27th and #GivingTuesday helped DiabetesSisters reach the 50% mark for the This Week I Will campaign. Thanks to everyone who participated! Please continue to visit This Week I Will to make your weekly health pledges.

Volunteer of the Month:
Lori Veliquette
DiabetesSisters extends a sincere
Thank You to Lori Veliquette!
A few years after having gestational diabetes with her son, Lori was misdiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. A few years later (and some standing up for herself), she was relieved to have a proper diagnosis of Type 1. She has now lived with Type 1 diabetes for 4 years and truly is an inspiration and an advocate for other women with diabetes.
After her diagnosis with Type 1, she was frustrated by the lack of support in her area. After searching extensively for a support network, she learned about DiabetesSisters' Weekend for Women Conference in San Diego, CA. Though it required her to step out of her comfort zone, the conference impacted more than she ever imagined. In fact, she refers to her conference experience as "transformational" for her. She said, "That conference changed me and the way I cared for myself. To be in a room with so many women that all had the same issues was completely amazing! I met new friends that I still keep in touch with."
Unfortunately, upon returning home, she began to feel alone again. Always proactive in her approach to health management, she reached out to DiabetesSisters to find out how to start a PODS Meetup in her area. Not surprisingly, the Novato, CA PODS Meetup group (started and led by Lori) just passed its one year anniversary and now has 30 Sisters on its roster. Lori has also been instrumental in bringing the Weekend for Women Conference to San Francisco, CA in October 2013. Lori said, "I was determined to bring women with diabetes together. I'm no longer alone in this journey and it feels wonderful. I've made some long lasting friendships that I will cherish forever."
We are very grateful to Lori for her great work encouraging women in her area to come together each month and now putting together a fantastic conference for next year which is sure to inspire even more women with diabetes.
DiabetesSisters thanks Lori and each member of our volunteer team for their commitment to the organization. Your contribution is appreciated.
