SISTER SPOTLIGHT:

DIABETESSISTERS Needs YOU!

The DiabetesSisters Newsletter team is seeking nominations for our monthly "Sister Spotlight" segment. We know our members have heard some amazing stories when making connections at DiabetesSisters' PODs Meetups, the Annual Conference, the Women's Forum or through the SisterMatch program.

Uncle Sam

Each month, our Sister Spotlight segment receives raves from women all over the world who tell us how inspiring and motivating they find the "real stories" from "real women with diabetes".  In fact,  for many, the stories have a big impact on how women view themselves and their diabetes.

Please help us get to know YOU! We wish we could be all over the world to hear your stories, but we simply can't.  So, we need your help to identify people who have made a difference or have a triumphant or inspiring "diabetes story."

Send your Sister Spotlight nomination(s) to shandra@diabetessisters.org and we will contact the individual letting them know a fellow Sister nominated them for the Sister Spotlight.  Don't be shy about nominating yourself.  Your story could change someone's life!  We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

The DiabetesSisters Newsletter Team

DIABETESSISTERS' FOUNDER AND MEMBERS TO PRESENT AT 2012 AADE CONFERENCE

DiabetesSisters' founder Brandy Barnes and fellow DS members, Claire Blum, Connie Hanham-Cain, and Laurie Porcaro will be speaking about the unique support and learning opportunities that peers can provide to women with diabetes at the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 4, 2012.

In their session, "DiabetesSisters: Peer Support Model that Supports your Practice," they explain how peer groups, exemplified by the DiabetesSisters Model, can provide social and emotional support to women and lead to better diabetes self-management.

"THIS WEEK I WILL" CAMPAIGN HELPS DS MEMBERS IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH WHILE ALSO RAISING CRITICAL FUNDS

Big changes start small. What could you do in one week? The "This Week I Will" campaign by Amylin is challenging people with type 2 diabetes to take one small step toward improving their self-care while supporting charities like DiabetesSisters.  Although this campaign is focused on people with Type 2 diabetes, it is not limited to people with Type 2 diabetes.

Starting in September 2012, each time you go to ThisWeekIWill.com (link will be LIVE in late August or early September) and commit to a weekly pledge, such as eating green vegetables every day or keeping a blood sugar diary, you can earn money for DiabetesSisters. For each pledge made on behalf of DiabetesSisters, Amylin will make a $5 donation, up to $20,000 (4,000 pledges).
The impact of your pledge will extend far beyond a week. It's a chance to kick-start healthy habits, connect with other individuals with type 2 diabetes, and support your Sisters. Starting September 2012, go to ThisWeekIWill.com (link will be LIVE in late August or early September) and start making small changes to improve your type 2 diabetes care. While you're there, don't forget to share your pledge on Facebook or Twitter.

Volunteer of the Month:

Rhonda Beese

Beese Family

DiabetesSisters extends a sincere Thank You to

Rhonda Beese

After being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 21, Rhonda has now lived with diabetes for almost 18 years. Soon after having her daughter, she read about DiabetesSisters in a blog and immediately knew she wanted to get involved. She shared, "DiabetesSisters was what I'd been looking for, but didn't even know it existed. As an older first time mom,  I desperately wanted to know other people who had gone through fertility issues, pregnancy, and motherhood with diabetes, survived, and been all the stronger and better for it. By finding DiabetesSisters, I found all of that, and more!"

Since then, Rhonda has been helping DiabetesSisters in many ways, including joining the planning committee for the 2012 Weekend for Women Conference and the Orange:Will Diabetes Awareness Walk. She also helped capture the great success of these events by photographing them. On top of it all, she was one of the top 2 fundraisers for the walk. Rhonda gathered her friends and family and motivated them to rally for the cause, all together raising over $1,500 dollars for DiabetesSisters.

We are thankful for Rhonda's incredible dedication to DiabetesSisters and are lucky to count her as a member of the volunteer team.

DiabetesSisters thanks Rhonda and each member of our volunteer team for their commitment to the organization. Your contribution is appreciated!

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

If you haven't already completed the survey, please let us know

if you're interested in attending the 2013 Conference online.

DiabetesSisters is assessing new methods to reach more women and welcome them into the Sisterhood. In addition to making plans to offer the Conference on the East and West coasts in 2013, we're also assessing the value of offering Conference attendance online.

Even if you've never attended a conference before, your feedback is needed. Click here to take the brief survey. It should take only 3-5 minutes to complete. Thank you!
