JULY 2015 NEWSLETTER, ISSUE 82

Dear Anna,

I hope you had a wonderful 4th of July celebration and holiday weekend. I spent the weekend with my family, unpacking our new home in Chicagoland. It's a bit unconventional, but when surrounded by my husband and son, it makes another memory for our books.

Today, I am on my way to Orlando, Florida, to participate in the Diabetes Hands Foundation's MasterLab sessions and represent DiabetesSisters.  During these two days, I will be exposed to people, resources and skills to help be a better advocate for us: women with diabetes. Diabetes Hands Foundation paid for my registration and a portion of my travel and lodging through a scholarship; however, my report next month will reflect my personal views and opinions. I can't wait to report back to you!

At the end of the week, I will be presenting at the annual Friends for Life Conference, at a session entitled: Women, Diabetes, and the Power of Peer Support. I am excited to present at this life-changing conference and share stories of what DiabetesSisters has accomplished through our PODS Meetups, our signature program that reaches over 1,000 women each year.

This month, we welcome a new set of bloggers to our site: Laura and Lori, who will share their stories with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. One of our CDE contributors, Clara, answers questions posed by our PODS Leaders earlier this year at our Leadership Institute. I encourage you to link on the sisterTALK blogs on the right hand column.

Until next month - enjoy the summer!

'YOU MUST HAVE THE BAD KIND OF DIABETES": THINGS TO NEVER SAY TO PEOPLE WITH DIABETES

How many times have we heard someone say something like this as it relates to diabetes? Our friends at Integrated Diabetes Services have put together this list of things we often hear and the best way to respond to them.

"You must have the bad kind of diabetes"

Response: Is there a good kind of diabetes? Type 1 and Type 2 do have different challenges. Type 2s are often unnecessarily blamed for their disease, and people are generally doing the best they can with what they have to work with. I don't think anyone wants to have diabetes.

"Should you be eating THAT?"
Response: All things in moderation, as long as I count my carbohydrates, watch portion and take the right amount of insulin I can eat what I would like. It's no worse for me to eat this than it is for anyone else.
