Dear Anna ,

Physical Fitness is our theme for the month of June and it couldn't come at a better time! The weather is warming up, the days are longer, and we have more energy to exert.   My daughter and I have been outside doing something (yard work, playing basketball, riding bikes) almost every day for the last two weeks.  It feels so good to physically exert myself.  Not to mention the fact that I sleep much better when I exercise.  If you're looking for some ways to increase your physical activity this month, be sure read Ginger Vieira's article below and, if you haven't already, attend a PODS Meetup in your area!

PHYSICAL FITNESS:  FIVE WAYS TO MOVE MORE
by Ginger Vieira

1. Make It a Priority, Baby!

Sure, it's possible that some people really have crazy, busy schedules, but for most of us, there is at least 30 minutes we could create for ourselves by getting out of bed 30 minutes earlier or spending 30 minutes less watching TV every day.

2. It Doesn't Have to Be Every Single Day!

If you really haven't been exercising at all lately, then pick just two or three days of the week that you will commit to exercising. And guess what? It doesn't have to be for 60 minutes or more in order to count. If your 30 minutes of strength-training are serious and intense, that's awesome, and that's plenty! Continue reading

SISTER SPOTLIGHT:  ANDREA THOMAS

Andrea and Brandy at our recent Weekend for Women Conference

Andrea was diagnosed with diabetes five and a half years ago because of abscesses on her face and hands that would not heal. Her blood work showed a fasting blood glucose of over 300 mg/dl.

She learned of DiabetesSisters while doing an online search and loved that the organization was about Sisterhood. "Plus, I really liked the logo. It could be any woman and that really appealed to me." Andrea joined her DiabetesSisters at the most recent Weekend for Women Conference in Washington, DC.

I would hazard to guess that many who know me would consider me a smart, well-adjusted woman.  I have a wonderful family and friends, love to laugh, and a wonderful career as an executive in an organization that helps people in need.    Like the impact of diabetes on the body, however, so much can be going on inside psychologically (fear, anger, guilt) while we look perfectly fine outside.

I think one of my defining moments of coming to grips with being a diabetic was sitting on my couch one day about a week after being diagnosed and checking my blood sugar.  I burst into tears thinking, "I have to poke myself for the rest of my life".  Afterwards, it dawned on me that I have a rest of my life.   I had to be grateful for everyday and that this disease is not a death sentence.

I am not alone.  Support is important because it increases accountability, but also encourages me to take care of myself and remember that I am worth the time it takes to take care of myself.

DiabetesSisters reminded me that I for the past five and a half years, I have been in this fight standing alongside very courageous women...   Continue reading

WEEKEND FOR WOMEN CONFERENCE:STEPPING STONES

Please join us October 24-25, 2014, for a weekend to remember with your Sisters in sunny Los Angeles, CA! You'll have time to visit the highlights of LA while also learning new diabetes "life tools".  The theme of this year's Conference Series is "Stepping Stones"- referring to the importance of taking small steps toward better diabetes management/wellness rather than trying to make huge changes all at once.  Diabetes is a marathon....not a sprint!

I dreamed last night that DiabetesSisters extended the conference for the rest of the week and we all hung out. Wishful dreaming? - Leann, First Time Conference Attendee

The bonding that happens between women with diabetes at these events is truly remarkable!  But another part that I have found so rewarding through the years is the knowledge and motivation gained through connections and sessions to keep me empowered.  - Stacey, Multiple Conference Attendee

Based on attendee feedback from previous Conferences, we have opened THIS Weekend for Women Conference to:

  • WOMEN WITH ALL TYPES OF DIABETES (pre-diabetes, type 1, type 2, LADA, gestational)

Building a sisterhood of strong, lasting relationships between women with diabetes is at the core of DiabetesSisters' mission.
