Dear Sister,

I don't know about you, but I love the summer months. The extra hours of sunshine allow me to accomplish so much - including tending to my garden, which provides my family with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. I always feel so accomplished growing my own food; although, it's not an easy feat. I need to weed, water, and nourish it. And I am always adapting to the environment around my garden, making adjustments, learning for future gardens. It is very much like living with diabetes. I am constantly adapting to changes and tweaking things as I go along. I may not always get the results I want, but each day is a new experience and an opportunity to grow with diabetes, learning to persevere and thrive.

I hope you will read through this month's newsletter: we have pooled together a variety of articles on healthy eating - even provided some recipes!

And, of course, please register for our upcoming Life Class Webinar "Straight Talk About Low Calorie Sweeteners for People with Diabetes". Hosted by Hope Warshaw, you will not want to miss it.

I am heading to New Orleans late this week to attend the American Diabetes Association 76th Scientific Sessions. This is the time where DiabetesSisters meets with funders, partners, and other healthcare providers, telling them YOUR stories and needs. If you have anything you would like us to share with them, please email us and let us know.

Finally, I continue to ask YOU - our membership - to please help us with a gift to DiabetesSisters through our Sister Strength giving program. Your gift, regardless of amount, can make a HUGE impact in the lives of women with diabetes. And this year, we've received a special gift from a generous donor: they will match every dollar raised up to $30,000. This means that your gift will have DOUBLE the impact to help us continue to grow our programs, both online and in-person.

Until next month,

In Sisterhood,

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: HOW MANY OF YOUR LOWS GO UNNOTICED?

We all know that hypoglycemia can be extremely dangerous, and catching and treating these lows is challenging (to say nothing of taking too much time out of your day). But did you know that 57% of lows go unnoticed? Many people are having lows without even knowing it, especially at night.* So, what do you do about it?

Well, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is a great first step. It measures glucose levels from the fluid under your skin, giving you 288 readings per day instead of just the occasional fingerstick readings. But if you really want protection from lows (especially the ones you might not even know you're having) knowing your sensor number isn't enough. You need a system that takes action!

The MiniMed® 530G system with SmartGuard™ technology is the only insulin pump and CGM on the market proven to reduce your risk of lows.^ It includes SmartGuard technology exclusive to Medtronic, a revolutionary breakthrough in diabetes control thatautomatically stops insulin delivery when your sensor value reaches or falls below a pre-set threshold.

Now, How Does it Work?
When your sensor glucose reaches or falls below the value that you and your healthcare team have set for you, the pump will go into Threshold Suspend (the SmartGuard technology).

EASY TIPS: REDUCING SODIUM CONSUMPTION
Despite what many think, the use of the salt shaker is not the main cause of too much sodium in diet. In fact, over 75% of dietary sodium comes from eating packaged and restaurant foods, whereas only a small portion (11%) comes from salt added to food when cooking or eating. But, even though sodium is already in these foods when you purchase them, there are still some steps you can follow to lower your daily sodium intake
  • Read the Nutrition Facts Label: to see how much sodium is in foods and beverages. Most people should consume less than 100% of the Daily Value (or less than 2,400 mg) of sodium each day. Check the label to compare sodium in different brands of foods and beverages and choose those lower in sodium.
  • Prepare your own food (when you can): Limit packaged sauces, mixes, and "instant" products (including flavored rice, instant noodles, and ready-made pasta).
  • Add flavor without adding sodium: Limit the amount of salt you add to foods when cooking, baking, or at the table. Try no-salt seasoning blends and herbs and spices instead of salt to add flavor to your food.
  • Buy fresh: Choose fresh meat, poultry, and seafood, rather than processed.

HEALTHY EATING HABITS: GUIDELINES

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends healthy eating patterns for a healthier life. Changing habits can be difficult. Consider the following three tips to improve healthy eating habits:

1. Drink a lot of water. Add fruit to water if it helps!

2. Minimize sodium intake by using less sauces and condiments

3. Write everything down! Logging raises awareness.
