Happy September! I hope you enjoyed a relaxing Labor Day holiday with friends and family! As you probably recall, Anna and I ventured to Orlando, FL last month to attend the annual AADE Conference. IN addition to Anna's hard work at the booth, I also want to thank the volunteers who came out to represent DiabetesSisters at Booth #152-- Claire Blum, Judith Jones-Ambrosini, Barbara Metcalf, Cherise Shockley, Ruth Harnden, and Linda Bork. We could not have done it without you!!
The theme of this month is menopause...yes, that word that so many of us dread! In this month's newsletter you'll find an article written by a physician who speicalizes in menopause and a 'real life' experience with menopause as told by a DiabetesSisters' member. If you attend a PODS meetup this month, you'll also receive a great deal of information about menopause from the group discussion and have the opportunity to ask questions. Last but not least, please be sure to mark your calendar for our Life Class webinar, "5 Things Women with Diabetes Need to Know about Menopause" on September 17th at 4pm. Registration info can be found below.
Until next month--- make gratitude your daily motto!

MENOPAUSE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
by Mache Seibel, MD
About 6000 women enter menopause every day and millions more are in the ten-year window around menopause called perimenopause. In nearly 20 years, I've had the opportunity to talk with and treat thousands of women for their menopause issues. Many patients came in feeling frustrated and confused, but I found that when I helped them understand the issues they were facing, it helped them gain clarity over the contradictions, misunderstandings and negative press about menopause.
1. What is Menopause? Menopause is defined as one year after your last period. The average age in the United States for women going through menopause is 51.
2. What is Perimenopause? Perimenopause is the window leading up to menopause. During this time, hormones begin to go out of balance and symptoms may begin, such as feelings of warmth and poor sleep. Continue reading.

DIABETES AND MENOPAUSE: NUCLEAR MELTDOWN DAYS
by Judith Jones-Ambrosini
I clearly remember waking up in the middle of the night drenched with sweat. Yikes! I thought "What's going on here?" In a misty midnight daze of alarm and confusion, I reached for the bg meter on my nightstand to check my blood sugar. It was 111. Fine. I didn't feel any symtoms of a hypoglycemic episode, so where were these awful sweats coming from? Perhaps I was coming down with a cold or flu.
About Judith Jones-Ambrosini
Judith has lived with diabetes for over fifty years and has been recognized by Lilly with a Lilly for Life award for journalism and by Medtronic as a Helping Hands calendar recipient. Her diabetes columns, Judith's Cyber Kitchen and MoTo Move can be found onwww.diabetesnet.com.
