Answer:

Dear Taken by Surprise,

Diabetes most often comes as an unexpected visitor, and receiving a diagnosis of diabetes represents a tremendous loss of the way you expected life to turn out! You do not mention if you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, or if you know as yet . . . and it is very important to know, as an understanding of the underlying cause of your diabetes helps you know what to do and where to go for help.

Coming to DiabetesSisters is a great place to start, as you will find invaluable information and support amongst your Sisters who have diabetes. You may also want to check out the American Diabetes Association website, for additional support and resources.

Allow yourself time to grieve the loss of the way you expected life to be . . . while remaining open to the potential that life with diabetes can take you to a place of courage and acceptance, which is a gift that diabetes can give back to you . . . if you let it!
