DS Quarterly Gathering in Raleigh, NC

June 13, 2010

Another week has come and gone.  They seem to be passing faster and faster, but I think that’s because DiabetesSisters is keeping me busier and busier with every passing week.  You won’t hear me complaining because it is a wonderful thing that DiabetesSisters has so much going on!

Yesterday (Saturday) I had the pleasure of eating lunch with a group of about 20 of my local DiabetesSisters at our Quarterly Gathering at Brio Tuscan Grill in Raleigh.  We heard an inspirational talk from a woman living with diabetes and shared in priceless laughs and realizations with our fellow DiabetesSisters.  Many of the women in the room have become very important in my life!  It seems so long ago now that I was searching for a friend with diabetes.   Yet, it was only three years ago!  Life is so much different for me now.  Now, I have the joy of sitting in a room full of women with diabetes every month at our PODS meetings and once every quarter at our Quarterly Gatherings.  I even have access (via email and phone) to more women with diabetes… and I spend the majority of my days talking to women with diabetes or talking about the issues faced by women with diabetes.   I am so blessed!  It is my goal/my life’s work to see that every woman with diabetes has the opportunity to experience this kind of support and education.  It is truly life-changing.

At the Quarterly Gathering, we had a WIDE range of women with pre-diabetes, type 1, type 1.5, and type 2 diabetes who ranged in age from 25-81!  There was a woman there who had lived with diabetes for 5 months and there was a woman who had lived with diabetes for 55 years there!  It is so inspiring to me to see and talk to women who have lived with diabetes for a long time.  It gives me hope!  It is also great to be able to help those women who were recently diagnosed and are feeling overwhelmed and alone in the disease.  That’s the great thing about attending and actively participating in one of our meetings.  Not only can you feed your soul, but you can also feed the souls of other women with diabetes at the same time.  Remember—you get out of it what you put into it!  If you are considering attending a meeting, I encourage you remove the “consumerism” mentality of “What am I getting out of this?  Feed my soul.”  Instead, look at it from the perspective of: “I am going to get out of this experience what I put into it.  If I want someone to help me/encourage me/educate me, I have to be willing to do the same.”  That’s what Sisterhood is all about!  Helping each other.  The women who were in attendance yesterday demonstrated this concept so well.  Now, I hope that as we start to see PODS Meetings and Quarterly Gatherings pop up all over the country (hopefully in your area!), this mentality will remain intact.  Without it, there is no sisterhood!

If you are interested in starting a Quarterly Gathering (at a restaurant) or a PODS meeting (in your home) in your area, please email Kelli at kelli@diabetessisters.org.  We will provide resources to help you get started.
