Maintaining healthy food choices is a challenge when traveling

I’ll be honest. I haven’t been doing such a great job of eating healthy these last few weeks. Sure I’m trying to make healthy choices. It’s just that I’ve been traveling. The living out of your suitcase for weeks, only home for two days out of the month, doing laundry in a hotel kind of traveling. And with that sort of travel it’s difficult to maintain a healthy diet. You really have to know your options when it comes to eating out because that’s what you’ll be doing.


There are hidden calories everywhere. I once attended a session about healthy eating led by a nutritionist offered by my company. During that session, I learned that certain chain restaurants make steamed vegetables taste better by soaking them in butter before steaming them. Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky…


So what do I do about that? I look for restaurants that make nutritional information easily accessible. Some restaurants post the nutritional information on their websites and you can find it really quickly. If I walk into a restaurant and they have calorie counts posted on their menu, that’s even better. That puts the information right in front of me and I’m more likely to make healthier menu choices. If I can’t find nutritional information, then it’s very possible that I’ll order really poorly. In fact, I might just order that burger and fries because it’s easy. And when I’m traveling, I like easy. Luckily, there are restaurants popping up everywhere that are focused on healthy diets. They offer healthy fresh food options that are quick and easy. So that’s made my travel a bit easier. However, finding those places can be a challenge when visiting a new-to-me location so I rely heavily on the internet to help.


Now, if I can just resist those snack packets on each of my flights and all the snacks provided during the breaks of my conferences...


this post is very informative. Type 1 diabetes is a ruthless disease itself but if one is not careful, they could suffer from heart attack too

I too suffer at conferences where you're in meetings all day and there are endless snacks, and food buffets. I wish I could just curb my appetite. Or be ruthless and put less on the plate! There are healthy choices among the mass of food.. it's making the choice!
