As trite as it may seem, New Years really is a great time to reflect on the previous year. As we begin to set intentions for the twelve months to come, we can think back on how much we’ve changed and about the growth that’s yet to come. It’s the time of year when the holidays finally end and life begins to settle back into the familiar routines we’re used to.
This new year, I’m working on seeing myself as a whole person. There are many areas of life that make up my own personal health, and it is my intention in the new year to give proper attention to each aspect that impacts my overall sense of wellbeing. New Year’s resolutions don’t always have to be about losing weight, or starting a trendy new diet, but they can include addressing other areas of your life you’d like to work on, too.
For me, that means my relationships, physical activity, and finances. Although my diet and personal nutritional needs are always something I’m exploring, I’m choosing to focus on other areas that fuel me as a person. I know that by achieving a greater sense of balance in the many areas of my life, feeling better, both physically and emotionally, will be a whole lot easier!
Within my relationships, I’m hoping to deepen the bonds I have with the people closest to me in my life. I’d like to work on being a better partner, a better daughter, a better sister, and a better friend. I’m grateful to have so many wonderful, supportive people in my world, and in 2018, it is my hope that I can show them just how much they mean to me by putting continuing to put in the extra effort with my relationships. Working on communication and being a better listener is a particular area of interest to me, because in my life, I always want to be able to speak the truth that reflects my highest self.
In regards to my physical activity, I’m hoping to just move MORE! It’s not that I don’t exercise now. In fact, I spend a lot of time on my yoga mat, and have recently become a little more dedicated to the exploration of running for fun, too! (Something I never thought I’d enjoy!) Over the next year, I’m hoping to commit myself to moving my body each and every day. Even on the days where my blood sugar isn’t exactly cooperating, I want to find a way to work in harmony with my body, listening intently to what it needs, and finding some way to work through my discomfort, knowing that in the end, movement truly does help me.
Lastly, in 2018, I hope to take an honest look at my finances, particular in regards to my healthcare and diabetes. Anyone living with a chronic illness knows how the bills can pile up and the expenses associated with taking care of yourself can become incredibly overwhelming. It is my intention to begin to find the best, most optimal way to pay for my diabetes management. I want to explore all my options and figure out if there is anywhere I can save a little money. I feel like once a lot of the administration work surrounding my diabetes is a little more organized, I will be able to take my management to the next level, and hopefully get a below 7 A1c that I’m shooting for this year! It’s no surprise that a person’s finances have a significant impact on their overall wellbeing, as money can be a HUGE stressor in people’s lives, and I really hope that throughout this year, I can work on getting myself into a better position in this area of my life.
It’s never too late to start thinking of your New Years priorities. Even if you don’t begin right on January 1st, each new day that you wake up with a beating heart, know you can start working towards the life you want and deserve. I recommend reaching out to friends or another supportive network for accountability and encouragement. You don’t need to take on the world alone! There are plenty of people who are willing to support you on your journey to becoming the best version of yourself in 2018.
