sisterTALK Blogs

Welcome to the sisterTALK Blogs!

Are you new to diabetes? Did you recently find out you are expecting? Do you feel as though no one really understands what you go through on a daily basis? Are you terrified of doing something wrong? Would you like to hear about another woman’s struggles and triumphs with diabetes?

You can find exactly what you are looking for HERE at DiabetesSisters. Through our sisterTALK blogs, you will find an outstanding network of women who share their thoughts and feelings about the nuances of living with diabetes in weekly blogs. Whether you are experiencing Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, or pregnancy and diabetes, there is someone here who "speaks your language." Every woman is highlighted for 3-6 months to tell us about her diabetes journey in her own words. By rotating bloggers on a 3-6 month basis, our readers are allowed to read about many different perspectives on the disease. If you have something in common with our highlighted bloggers or have a thought to share, we invite you to comment below the blog. If you are interested in serving as one of our "highlighted bloggers", please email us at info@diabetessisters.org.

Spring is (Nearly) Here; I'm Ready for Whatever Comes

sisterSTAFF Blog

After this uncharacteristically cold North Carolina winter, I am ready for some sunshine. We’ve had ice and snow and school closings – and it’s all made for adjustments and juggling of schedules and calendars. And naturally, it’s brought adjustments to my own diabetes management, as snow days mean being stuck at home, less exercise, more food consumption, etc.

A New Outlook for 2015

sisterSTAFF Blog

When I last posted in November 2014, I was feeling rundown, tired and unmotivated. I received many messages from you, offering me support and encouragement: THANK YOU. I am happy to report that after a few weeks of rest and family time, I feel energerized and motivated.

Month of Gratitude - Trying to Stay Positive

sisterSTAFF Blog

I am generally a very upbeat person. I try to stay positive in all aspects of my life: personal, work, diabetes. But sometimes, I find myself exhausted, sad, and in my mind, to crawl into bed and hide under the covers. Today is the first of the month -  the first day of the upbeat holiday season that brings us to reflect on the year and set goals for the coming year.

As I sat down to write this month’s sisterSTAFF blog, I glanced at the date and realized it’s my diaversary. Twenty one years ago, with a blood sugar of over 1200 mg/dl, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Perfectly Imperfect: Parenting a Child With Diabetes

Perspectives

I’d never really given much thought to the notion of love at first sight until the moment that my precious daughter, Nicole, was first placed into my arms, and I was as they say, instantly and utterly ‘hooked’! I couldn’t stop looking at her, completing the requisite counting of fingers and toes, and marveling at this tiny perfect being my husband and I had created.

Reflections: Why I Do What I Do

sisterSTAFF Blog
Last weekend, DiabetesSisters hosted its SEVENTH Weekend for Women Conference. I have been fortunate enough to attend 5 of these Conferences (missing only 2010 Raleigh and 2012 San Diego), as  attendee, volunteer and staff member. This year, I have returned from Washington, DC, where the Conference was held more motivated than ever.

Diabetes is a part of my life too

Perspectives

I met my wife online in March 2011. We clicked almost instantly and married on August 4, 2012. We share a love of our faith, TV crime dramas and cats, serving as “mom” and “dad” to Callie and Stash.

Diabetes has been a part of her life since she was 10 months old – and now it is a part of mine, too.

I have come to recognize the musical sound of her sensor and just nudge her in bed, lovingly saying: “Hon, you’re beeping.”
