The DiabetesSisters Leadership Institute is an intensive training and teambuilding opportunity for active volunteer PODS Leaders to:

  • Develop and enhance skills in facilitating conversations among women living with all types of diabetes and prediabetes;
  • Create open, welcoming atmospheres that encourage honest discussions;
  • Brainstorm ways to promote, recruit, maintain, and grow PODS Meetups; and
  • Engage with PODS Leaders from around the nation.

Leadership Institute participants are selected based on demonstrated leadership in DiabetesSisters and PODS Meetups; record of dependability and teamwork; demonstrated commitment to building diverse, inclusive, respectful, supportive groups; and locations of PODS Meetups.


Friday, September 27
Check-in begins 4pm; Volunteer Appreciation Social begins 6pm

Saturday, September 28
Morning Movement 6:30am, Sessions 8am-5pm, Hip Hop Fit 5pm, Dinner 6pm

Sunday, September 29
Morning Movement 6:30am, Sessions 8am-12pm, Lunch 12pm


Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Magnificent Mile - 511 N Columbus Dr., Chicago, IL 60611

The Embassy Suites Chicago Magnificent Mile is accessible from O’Hare or Midway by subway/rail for $2.50 - $5 each way, but can require multiple ride transfers and/or walking of up to ½ mile en route to the hotel. Taxi fare from O'Hare Airport to downtown runs between $40 and $50 and from Midway Airport between $30 and $35, depending on traffic. Shared ride service such as Uber or Lyft can run slightly less than taxi fare.


Included with Registration:

  • Leadership Institute sessions and materials
  • Shared double room hotel reservation (2 PODS Leaders per room) at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Magnificent Mile for September 27 and 28 (arrangements made by DiabetesSisters)
  • Up to $400 reimbursed for round-trip transportation (airfare, train/bus, car fare) to Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Magnificent Mile
  • Friday night special event on September 27 (heavy appetizers and nonalcoholic beverages)
  • Complimentary breakfast served at Embassy Suites on September 28 and 29
  • Lunch and snacks on September 28 and 29


Participants are responsible for:

  • $25 registration fee. If the fee is a financial burden blocking your ability to register, please contact Sarah Mart to discuss.
  • Dinner on Saturday night (Sept. 28)
  • Any hotel nights in addition to Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28
  • Any additional room charges such as room service, movies, etc.
  • Single occupancy hotel room - Any PODS Leader who wishes to have a single room must notify Sarah Mart via email that they waive the double occupancy reservation included with registration, and make and pay for their own single room reservation.



BY AUGUST 1: Complete and submit form below; once invitation email with registration link is received, register for the Leadership Institute

BY AUGUST 1: Submit volunteer agreement & nondisclose/noncompete forms; lead at least 3 PODS Meetups; and submit monthly reports/sign-in sheets for those Meetups.

SEPTEMBER 27-29: Attend all Leadership Institute sessions and activities

SEPTEMBER 27-29: (PODS Leaders who have previously attended Leadership Institute) Provide leadership during the Institute with responsibilities assigned by DS staff.

BY OCTOBER 10: Contribute a blog post of 500 words maximum, describing attendee highlights from the Institute and as a PODS Leader and the value of the Institute for PODS Leaders.

BY OCTOBER 10: Submit receipts for allowed transportation expenses. Reimbursements of amounts up to, and not exceeding, the $400 travel stipend amount will be mailed during the first week of November 2019.
