Aspartame

For the last couple years I have been hearing how terrible diet sodas are for you. I believe this is mainly because of the artificial sweetener. As a person living with diabetes how do you avoid artificial sweeteners? I drink diet soda, drink coffee with sweet and low, chew sugar-free gum. Everywhere I look there is aspartame. I am really hoping the answer is not that I should only drink water. Help!

I feel the same way you do. I have had type I diabetes for 32 years and drank the diet drinks for all these years. What are we to do? My answer is to drink in moderation. I also am a nurse and can see that the consumption of 5-6 diet sodas a day could take its tole. I do not see where one or two would hurt but I also would have to say that each person has different genes that may have family histories of cancer, MS, and so on that could increase the chances.
