Hello DiabetesSisters --

My name is Jane Dohrmann and I'm the new Co-moderator of the Women's Forum. I've already replied to several of you, but wanted to let you know that Laurie and I will be sharing the role and will be checking the Forum occasionally to ensure that your questions are answered and your needs are met. That's what we're here for!

Let me tell you a little about myself so you will know that the things I share with you are from a good place. I was diagnosed with juvenile onset diabetes in 1966. I was ten years old at the time and my parents were devastated. I, on the other hand, thought i had something no one else had. That was true and I think that mentality is what has truly saved me all these years. It's a bit arrogant, but I feel like my diabetes is mine and because I have taken ownership of it, I am extremely protective of it.

Saying that, what I mean is I don't take any nonsense from my doctors if I know I'm right about something and if I feel they aren't treating me right, I will tell them. We are, after all, the customer!

I didn't always feel this way and I don't suggest this right from the start, but once you have gotten comfortable with your diagnosis and feel confident about what you are doing, take charge and make good decisions about your health...to include the members of your healthcare team.

Support is priority #1. My parents were amazing. I didn't realize it then, but they were hard on me for a reason and now I know why. I also had a wonderful friend who also had diabetes who was more my Mom's age. She was my mentor before "mentor" was a fashionable thing to be. She is the reason why I do what I do: help others with their diabetes adjustment/management/coping skills.

I also do similar work for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Online Diabetes Support Team (ODST) and have worked with them since 2007. It's great work.

Personally, my husband is my pal, my best friend and my life saver! He can get a glucagon emergency kit ready in a flash and knows where I've hidden every can of juice in the house in case I need them in a jam! Our son, Justin and our daughter-in-law, Kimberly live nearby and although we don't have any grandchildren yet, we do have a grandkitty, named Barry! We also have two cats named Moo and Oafie. That's all for now. We'll talk more as time goes on. Let me know if you need me or if i can help you in any way!;)
