New to Forum and Looking for Information

Hello!  I am a T1, diagnosed at 16.  I've been on injections for twenty years since April.  I heard about this site from my endo's Diabetes Educator (wonderful lady) as a recommendation for a place to help my husband learn about my condition.  We will have been married for six years in January and recently my low blood sugars have come on more intensely with less warning...mostly since the birth of our son a couple of years ago.  For the first time since my diagnosis, I am feeling a bit less than independent in my management.  My husband has a basic understanding, but he asks me questions that alarm me after all these years like when I am low, "Do you need you insulin?"  That is dangerous when my lows are to the point where speech is difficult and I need sugar and cannot convey that well or get it myself easily.  My older kids seem to better understand which need I have better than my husband, the sugar or the insulin.  So, thankfully, he came to me with the question of where he should go to find the info he needs to be more helpful and better understand me and how diabetes affects not just me, but our relationship, as well.  So, here I am.

Hi Lori-Anne - Welcome to the Sisterhood! I am thrilled that you have reached out to help your husband gain a better understanding of diabetes and how it affects you. We hold an annual meeting for women living with diabetes, and open it up to partners as well. We just had one last month in Los Angeles. We will hold more in 2015. For the time being I urge you to read many of the different websites on how to best support people living with diabetes. Since this month is Diabetes Awareness Month, you will find a wealth on knowledge and information online. Good luck!
