AUGUST 2014 NEWSLETTER                                                                                     ISSUE 70

Dear Anna ,

I hope you have enjoyed the summer!  It's hard to believe it is already August.  Anna and I will be heading to the AADE Conference in Orlando, FL in a few short days. Anna will meet up with DiabetesSisters volunteers to oversee DiabetesSisters' booth in the Exhibit Hall and I have scheduled back-to-back meetings with potential donors, sponsors, and board members. This will be the seventh AADE Conference I have attended representing DiabetesSisters-- and Anna's first!  If you are planning to attend, please stop by booth #152 and say hello. Otherwise,  we'll update you in next month's newsletter with plenty of photos and articles. Until then--I hope the information provided in this month's newsletter inspires and empowers you to live the happiest, healthiest life possible with diabetes- not in spite of diabetes!

WEEKEND FOR WOMEN CONFERENCE: FIRST TIME IN LOS ANGELES

Please join us October 24-25, 2014, for a weekend to remember with your Sisters in sunny Los Angeles! Our two-day conference allows time to learn new diabetes "life tools" while also leaving time to visit the highlights of iconic LA! This year's Stepping Stones theme refers to the importance of taking small steps toward better diabetes management and wellness rather than trying to make huge changes all at once. Our journeys may all be different, but we can take steps together toward the same goal of diabetes wellness.

Based on attendee feedback from previous Conferences, we have opened THIS Weekend for Women Conference to:

  • WOMEN WITH ALL TYPES OF DIABETES (pre-diabetes, type 1, type 2, LADA, gestational)
  • LOVED ONES OF WOMEN WITH DIABETES (husbands, boyfriends, parents, adult children, roommates, best friends, etc.)

The registration fee for the Weekend for Women is available at $125 from June 1- Oct 10, and $150 after Oct.10 - please note: registration is the same price for ALL attendees and covers all educational sessions, 1 Conference tote bag, 1 commemorative t-shirt, light appetizers on Friday night, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR UPCOMING CONFERENCE: APPLY TODAY

If you have always wanted to attend a Weekend for Women Conferences, but finances kept you away, now is your chance to join us! Four scholarships will be awarded to our upcoming Conference in Los Angeles. Read what Sarah, scholarship recipient, had to say about diabetes, Sisterhood, support and her experience at our Spring Conference in Washington, DC.

Sarah and Founder, Brandy Barnes
"Attending the Weekend for Women Conference in Washington, DC, completely changed my relationship with type one diabetes. Before the conference, I never really openly discussed diabetes. I internalized most of my thoughts and feelings about the disease because I was under the impression that it was something I had to go through completely alone. Meeting and talking to all of the women and attending the different workshops at the Weekend for Women Conference made me realize that I am not alone in this. It provided me with new strength and support, and allowed me to connect with an entire community of people that understand this invisible part of my life.

I was able to attend the conference by applying for a scholarship offered by DiabetesSisters, and I would definitely recommend other women consider applying. It helped me tremendously. With the assistance of the scholarship, I was able to experience my first Weekend for Women Conference, which I will never forget. I'm looking forward to attending many more."
 - Sarah, Scholarship Recipient, Washington, DC, 2014
Although she arrived alone, Sarah quickly met a group of Sisters that share her same journey and formed a community.

Weekend for Women Scholarships cover the cost of conference registration (including meals offered during the Conference) and double bed hotel accommodations for two nights (Friday and Saturday) at the Embassy Suites LAX North. For more information, and to apply, visit us online. Deadline to apply is September 1, 2014.

SUMMER GATHERINGS:  5 TIPS TO MAKING BBQS WORRY-FREE

It's summer and we're enjoying many outdoor gatherings, enjoying delicious food with family and friends. Everyone knows the typical BBQ foods: hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, and chips and dip. They may be delicious, but they're not always the most healthful foods out there. So how can you make a summer BBQ stress-free? Here are 5 tips to help you stay on top of your diabetes management:

1. Call the host/hostess ahead of time for a list of foods that will be served.  One way to plan for a BBQ is to call the host/hostess a day or two before to see what foods are going to be served. If it's a potluck, this is a chance for you to try a new recipe and bring something that you know the nutritional information for. Consider bringing leaner meats for grilling, whole grain buns, and side dishes with fruits or vegetables.

2. Test your blood glucose levels before and throughout the day.
On the day of the BBQ or party, test your blood glucose levels before you arrive and frequently throughout the day. Whether you're playing activities in the backyard, had a defined meal plan prior to coming, or will be "sampling" many foods there, it's important to stay on top of your diabetes.
