JULY 2014 NEWSLETTER                                                                                     ISSUE 69

Dear Anna ,

Summer is officially here! If you know me at all, you know that it's my favorite time of the year!  Following our annual family tradition, I enjoyed the true hallmarks of Independence Day at the beach -- including fireworks, burgers, sunshine, pool, and ocean. It's easy to get caught up in the ways that diabetes limits us in our everyday life, but its important to realize and appreciate how independentdiabetes has made us as well.  We have had to understand a complicated disease and how it interacts with our body, then mimic the work of our own pancreas; We have had to learn to calculate carbohydrates and many other random calculations (like insulin: carb ratios); We have had to learn to come up with Plan A, B, and C when our life-saving medication is low....not to mention all of the many other  things we have learned on our own. And while it has been challenging at times, we can all have pride in knowing that we are fierce, independent women because of our diabetes. Enjoy your holiday week!

WEEKEND FOR WOMEN CONFERENCE:STEPPING STONES

Please join us October 24-25, 2014, for a weekend to remember with your Sisters in sunny Los Angeles! Our two-conference allows time to learn new diabetes "life tools" while also leaving time to visit the highlights of iconic LA! This year's Stepping Stones theme refers to the importance of taking small steps toward better diabetes management and wellness rather than trying to make huge changes all at once. Our journeys may all be different, but we can take steps together toward the same goal of diabetes wellness.

Based on attendee feedback from previous Conferences, we have opened THIS Weekend for Women Conference to:

PHYSICAL FITNESS:  TOP FIVE TIPS FOR BALANCING BLOOD SUGARS DURING EXERCISE
by Ginger Vieira

1. Understand What Type of Exercise You're Doing

Jogging and strength-training will both have very different impacts on your blood sugar, even though your heart rate may rise during both. Anything that raises your heart rate for an extended period of time will lower your blood sugar.

2. Control as Many Variables as Possible

When you're starting a new form of exercise and want to know how that workout is going to impact your body on a regular day with a "regular" blood sugar, be sure to eat a meal you already know the carbohydrate count of, and don't start your workout with an out-of-range blood sugar (over 180, under 80). Continue reading
