May 2016 NEWSLETTER, ISSUE 92                                       Sponsored by:

One year ago, I was tasked with the responsibility of leading DiabetesSisters. It's been a wonderful twelve months and while I thought the time would be spent with me providing education and support to our community, I've realized it has entailed that, and much, much more. I am forever grateful to the Board of Directors and our community, who have entrusted me with leading this great organization.

During this time, I have been inspired by so many stories from YOU. I have had the pleasure to meet many of you at various diabetes-related events and communicated with you via email and telephone. Thank YOU for your willingness to share your stories, provide your best practices, and inspire other women to live the best they can, despite diabetes. Without YOU, there is no DiabetesSisters!

This newsletter brings you highlights of what has been happening and a glimpse of what's on the horizon. I hope you will join us on May 18, when Ginger Vieira leads our next Life Class webinar on Diabetes Burnout. Register in the link below - I promise you do not want to miss Ginger and her wisdom.

And please read Medtronic's post about insulin pumps and the value they present to people living with type 2 diabetes, along with news on our latest program geared toward women in minority communities.

The coming months will bring DiabetesSisters to various conferences, including the American Diabetes Association 76th Scientific Sessions (June) and the American Association of Diabetes Educators' Annual Meeting (August). This is the time where we meet with funders, partners, and other healthcare providers, telling them YOUR stories. If you have anything you would like us to share with them, please email us and let us know.

Finally, I continue to ask YOU - our membership - to please help us with a gift to DiabetesSisters through our Sister Strength giving program. Your gift, regardless of amount, can make a HUGE impact in the lives of women with diabetes. And this year, we've received a special gift from a generous donor: they will match every dollar raised up to $30,000. This means that your gift will have DOUBLE the impact to help us continue to grow our programs, both online and in-person.

Until next month,

In Sisterhood,

Anna Norton, MS

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: CLINICAL TRIAL RESULTS ON INSULIN PUMPS AND TYPE 2 DIABETES

Guest Contributor Dr. Francine Kaufman shares the results of the OpT2mise Trial and how it affects people living with type 2 diabetes. This post is sponsored by
Insulin pumps are often thought of as a medical device for people with type 1 diabetes. However, more and more research indicates that people with type 2 diabetes who are on multiple daily injections (MDI) can also benefit from using pumps.

For example, new results from a study called the OpT2mise Trial were recently published.* This is the largest global study to evaluate and compare insulin pump therapy versus multiple daily injections for people with type 2 diabetes.

These results could improve access to insulin pumps for the 3 million people around the world with type 2 diabetes on MDI and maybe even the 20 million people with type 2 who require insulin. Many health systems and governments around the world have said there is not enough scientific evidence to support use of insulin pump therapy in type 2 diabetes (even if they cover insulin pumps for people with type 1 diabetes). With the robust scientific data from this important study, Medtronic will partner with healthcare systems to demonstrate how effective this therapy can be to improve clinical outcomes.

LIFE CLASS WEBINAR SERIES:
DIABETES AND BURNOUT
Diabetes Burnout doesn't have to mean you've completely given up on your diabetes! It can simply mean you're really tired of the non-stop work around nutrition, exercise, medications, and oh yeah, checking your blood sugar. In this webinar, Ginger is going to talk about working your way

through burnout without trying to suddenly "cure" your burnout overnight. (Sadly, she doesn't have a cure for your diabetes either). Diabetes Burnout is something we all go through--and there's a way to work through it that's motivating and empowering!

DIABETESSISTERS LAUNCHES NEW MINORITY INITIATIVE
Attendees of our 1st Minority Initiative health forum
DiabetesSisters launched its first Minority Initiative event on April 7, 2016, in Silver Spring, MD with a focus on African American women living with, or at risk of, diabetes. We welcomed 65 women dedicated to improving their health and quality of life. DiabetesSisters Board Member Andrea Thomas led the program and shared her personal story of diabetes diagnosis and finding DiabetesSisters, an organization that provided information and empowered her to work together with her healthcare team to live her best diabetes life.

Throughout the evening, representatives from the Black Women's Health Imperative (Angela Ford, PhD, MPH), the US Food & Drug Administration Office of Women's Health (Zakiya Bell, MS), the African American Health Program (Cori Haynes, RN), and DiabetesSisters (Sarah Mart, MS, MPH) shared knowledge about diabetes and women of color.

During this event, Chef Owens provided attendees with her famous Sauteed Skillet Greens and Beans.
