This week we celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States. It's a time to spend with friends and family, reflecting on our blessings and giving thanks. My first grade students have been making lists of what they're thankful for as well: food, clothes, family, friends, a home, school, toys, etc. As I think of my thankful list, I have decided to include one thing that might baffle people. Diabetes.
Yes, I'm thankful for diabetes. Not for the blood tests and finger sticks. Not for the medication and continuous meter. I am thankful for the many friends I have made because of diabetes. Friends I've made through the DOC (diabetes online community). Chance encounters of others with diabetes I meet in my day to day life. Fundraising events and conferences that have introduced me to some amazing people. These connections are all because of diabetes.
As we go through our daily routine of counting carbs and adjusting medication to accommodate the turkey and stuffing, wishing we could have a bigger piece of pie, let's remember the good in every situation. Let's be thankful for all we have... including diabetes.
