At a DiabetesSisters Meetup, women connect online to share experiences, challenges, and encouragement about life with diabetes. Each virtual session is a safe, supportive space led by a trained volunteer Sister who also lives with diabetes. Frequently Asked Questions About DiabetesSisters Meetups
Find answers to the most common questions about DiabetesSisters Meetups – how they work, who can join, and what to expect. These FAQs are here to help you feel confident, welcomed, and ready to connect with a community of women who truly understand.
All women aged 18 and older who live with any type of diabetes – including type 1, type 2, LADA, gestational, or prediabetes – or who are at risk are welcome. Most Meetups are held virtually so you can join from anywhere, on your schedule, without the need to travel.
Almost all DiabetesSisters Meetups are virtual, making it easy to connect from home or wherever you are. Online sessions allow women from all backgrounds and locations to come together in one supportive community. Occasionally, you may see a regional or hybrid event listed, but the heart of our program is virtual.
Meetups explore all aspects of living well with diabetes – from healthy eating and being active to taking medication, reducing risks, and healthy coping with stress and burnout. You’ll also hear stories about using technology like CGMs or pumps, making sense of new medications like GLP-1s, and problem-solving real-life challenges. Every conversation is led by participants’ interests, so no two Meetups are exactly alike.
Peer support can make a powerful difference in emotional well-being. Talking with other women who understand diabetes helps reduce isolation, normalize frustration, and build confidence in self-management. Research shows that connecting with peers improves motivation and emotional resilience – key parts of healthy coping, one of the ADCES7 Self-Care Behaviors™. Many Sisters say their Meetup feels like a “reset button” that restores hope and energy.
Yes! Conversations often focus on topics that impact day-to-day life – like balancing meals, staying active, taking medications such as insulin or GLP-1s, and understanding how devices like CGMs or pumps can help. You’ll hear how other women find realistic, flexible ways to manage their health while enjoying life. No judgment, no “one right way” – just shared experiences and encouragement.
Visit our Meetup Events page and choose an upcoming session. Select Register to sign up, and you’ll receive a confirmation email with your Zoom link and details. All Meetups are free – you just need an internet connection and an open heart.
Virtual Meetups make it possible for more women to participate – regardless of location, transportation, or schedule. They allow for greater diversity of voices, flexible attendance, and continued safety and accessibility. Our Sisters say the online format makes it easier to connect more often and stay consistent with support.
Yes! Many women tell us that virtual Meetups feel surprisingly personal. Sessions are kept small and interactive, so everyone has space to share or simply listen. You’ll see familiar faces, hear encouraging stories, and form friendships that extend beyond the screen.
No – Meetups are always free to attend. DiabetesSisters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women through education and peer connection. Your participation helps strengthen this community of understanding and empowerment. Donations are welcome to help us continue offering free programs, but there is never a fee to join a Meetup.
Yes. Many Meetups include open conversations about medications such as insulin, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and other treatment options. Women share what’s helped them – from adjusting to injections or pumps to navigating side effects. While Meetups don’t replace medical advice, they provide peer-to-peer insights that make taking medication feel less isolating.
Motivation often comes from connection. Hearing other women’s success stories and struggles can spark new ideas and remind you that you’re not alone. Meetups celebrate small wins – like walking more, meal planning, or lowering stress – and help you set realistic goals for being active, eating well, and staying on track.
