The Weekend for Women Conference is the destination for the diabetes community’s greatest voices, hearts and minds. The goal of the Weekend for Women Conference is to educate, inspire, and transform women's view of their diabetes so that they can live full, happy lives with the disease.  Since the first Conference in May 2010, the event has become the premier forum for women with diabetes.

As part of the Weekend for Women tradition, a woman of courage is honored each year with the “DiabetesSisters Inspiration Award” and then delivers the keynote speech.  Past recipients include: 

  • 2010 - Nicole JohnsonMPH: Miss America 1999, has lived with diabetes since 1993 
  • 2011 - Ann Albright, PhD, RD: Director, Division of Diabetes Translation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; has lived with diabetes since 1967
  • 2012 - Natalie Strand, MD, Winner of CBS’ The Amazing Race in 2010, has lived with diabetes since 1991 

With a variety of educational and social events from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, the Weekend for Women Conference is the largest and most dynamic conference for women with diabetes in the world. Each year, women with diabetes from all walks of life, with all types of diabetes, of all ethnicities/backgrounds, ranging in age from 18-81, from at least 24 different US States and Canadian provinces gather to hear from nation’s leading diabetes researchers, experts, advocates, physicians, and educators.  Attendees are educated and inspired to view their diabetes in a different way and to make positive changes in their own lives, within their communities and around the world.  Needless to say, the Weekend for Women Conference has become a “must attend” event. Each year, tickets sell out in record-breaking time. Registration for the Weekend for Women Conference will open on January 1, 2013 at 8am. 

NEW IN 2013
In response to the surging demand for the Conference programming, the Weekend for Women Conference has expanded to include two Conference locations in 2013: Raleigh, NC on May 3-5, 2013 and San Francisco, CA on October 4-6, 2013.  Registration for the San Francisco, CA Weekend for Women Conference will open in May, 2013.  Additionally, all Conferences now include DiabetesSisters’ signature orange:will Diabetes Awareness Walk and the signature Partner’s Perspective Program (which offers programming for the partners and spouses of women with diabetes).  

WEEKEND AGENDA- RALEIGH, NC
The 2013 Weekend for Women’s Conference in Raleigh, NC will kick off with a fun social gathering on Friday, May 3, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Raleigh Sheraton in quaint downtown Raleigh.  The first day of the Conference will commence with the community-wide 2013 orange:will Diabetes Awareness Walk to raise funds and awareness of the unique challenges faced by women with diabetes.  The Walk provides a meaningful way for women with diabetes to be recognized and supported by their family and friend and to feel the support of the larger community. A minimum of $40 must be raised to earn a commemorative Walk t-shirt.  ABC11 will serve as the Media Partner of the event.   

On Saturday, May 4th from 10am-5pm,  our “Day of Health, Wellness, & Transformation” will feature “once-in-a-lifetime conversations” that combine the nation’s most knowledgeable and influential voices with engaging discussions about the issues that matter most to women with diabetes.  Breakout sessions will be packed with practical tips, tools, and takeaways for women with diabetes live healthy, feel good about themselves, and make major transformations in their lives. The highpoint of the day will be the celebratory lunch that continues DiabetesSisters tradition of honoring a woman of inspiration with the "DiabetesSisters Inspiration Award" and hearing from her in the keynote presentation.  The lunch will also include a celebration that recognizes of each woman in attendance for the number of years she has lived with diabetes and conclude with a monumental celebration of the woman in attendance that has lived the longest with diabetes.  The day will culminate with an evening social activity that provides the opportunity for attendees to explore downtown Raleigh with a smaller, more intimate group of Sisters.

Sunday, May 5th will feel a bit more “laid back”, yet still packed full of great information and opportunities to socialize.  Attendees will have the opportunity to attend novel on-site and off-site activities/sessions. 

The Partner’s Perspective Program will kick off on Friday night from 6-10pm with a fun, relaxing social event.  Saturday morning will commence with Partners Perspective attendees walking through historic downtown Raleigh, NC in the orange:will Diabetes Awareness Walk to support their partners with diabetes publicly . Then, from 10am-5pm the partners will participate in separate education/breakout sessions that are chocked full of information to educate them about diabetes and help them to better understand and support their partner with diabetes.  There will be lots of “how to” discussions from leading experts who understand the physical and mental challenges faced by women with diabetes.  Then, the partners will join their loved ones for the celebratory lunch and watch their spouse/loved one be publicly recognized for the number of years she has lived with diabetes.  On Sunday, the partners will join back together again for a fun social activity in downtown Raleigh, NC.  

The orange:will Diabetes Awareness Walk is an annual event to raise awareness about diabetes and its unique challenges for women with diabetes.  This year's walk will take place on Saturday, May 4 at 8am.  The one-mile walk will begin at the Raleigh Convention Center, 500 S. Salisbury Street, Raleigh.  We invite and encourage the entire community to join us for a festive morning of physical activity and fun times with friends and family while celebrating women who are facing the daily challenges of diabetes head-on!  This year's walk emcee is ABC 11's Anna Laurel.

All proceeds raised from the orange:will Diabetes Awareness Walk, the Weekend for Women Conference, and the Partner’s Perspective Program will support the continuation of DiabetesSisters’ programs and services. Please consider adding a donation amount of $10, $25, or $50 to your order. We greatly appreciate your support!

Everyone is encouraged to register for the walk. The tope fundraiser will win a luxurious trip for 2, including airline tickets for two to anywhere in the US, plus a $500 hotel voucher. Second place will win a 16GB Apple iPad with Retina display.

REGISTRATION & FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Scholarships are available to those who demonstrate a true financial need and an appreciation of the value of Sisterhood.  Five (5) recipients will receive a scholarship to attend the Conference.  Applications will be accepted from January 1-March 1, 2013.
