Some would say I've suffered with diabetes since March 2008. I have to disagree. I'm not just living with diabetes - I'm thriving with Type 2 diabetes!
Yes, there are days that diabetes wears me down. It's not easy living with a chronic illness. Counting carbs, testing my glucose, medication, exercising, dealing with highs and lows. It's enough to make my head spin! Daily commitments and stress add to the obstacles that diabetes puts on itself. How does one thrive when it often feels that the walls are caving in?
A good support system is very important. I am thankful for my primary care physician. He offers guidance while also letting me take the lead in my care. I am thankful for my husband. With his love and support, we plan healthy meals together (with the occasional splurge). It's not always easy with a busy family, but we do our best. I am thankful for my diabetes family, the diabetes online community (DOC). When I need encouragement from someone who has "been there, done that," I reach out to the DOC.
Emotional support is that element that keeps me going. Keeps me thriving. I still have my emotional ups and downs. Burnout is real. Depression and anxiety are real. But my determination to take control of my diabetes, and to thrive with type 2 diabetes, is just as real.
