Supporting Women with Gestational Diabetes

Being told you have gestational diabetes can feel overwhelming. You may wonder: “What does this mean for me? For my baby? For my future health?”

At DiabetesSisters, we know you are not alone in these questions. Thousands of women navigate gestational diabetes every year, and while it can feel isolating, there are communities and resources designed to walk with you through pregnancy and beyond.

That is why we are proud to collaborate with the DECIDE study, led by Dr. Kartik Venkatesh and his team at The Ohio State University. DECIDE is focused on one simple but powerful goal: to improve the way gestational diabetes is cared for, especially in the critical weeks after pregnancy when support can fade and new challenges emerge.

Why This Matters

Gestational diabetes does not end at delivery. Many women experience new health questions in the postpartum period, including recovery, breastfeeding, long-term health risks, and how to lower their chances of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.

The DECIDE Study is working to create better tools and care pathways during this time. By listening directly to women’s voices, DECIDE is helping shape an approach that is practical, compassionate, and patient-centered.

Our Role: Building a Hub of Support

As part of this collaboration, DiabetesSisters created the Gestational Diabetes Resource Hub. This is a dedicated space to support women during pregnancy and after. Inside, you will find:

  • Peer support stories from women who have walked this path and want you to know you are not alone
  • Educational resources that explain gestational diabetes in clear, non-judgmental language
  • Postpartum guidance to help you transition after delivery and focus on your own health as well as your baby’s
  • Community connections including support groups where you can share openly with others who truly understand

Centering Women’s Voices

We believe lived experience is the most powerful teacher. That is why we invite women to share their stories, questions, and needs. This not only supports each other, but also helps inform research like DECIDE. Together, we can change the narrative around gestational diabetes so it is less about shame or blame and more about empowerment, compassion, and practical tools.
